I thought I would pass on some thoughts targeted primarily toward the “newbies”, (someone thinking of, or have recently started, an E-Commerce website).
First and foremost, do whatever it takes to stay neutral when combing through the internet deciding on what niche market to get your feet wet in. There are tens of thousands to pick from. Just knowing that, ask yourself a few questions. Start your investigations in markets that you have an interest in. With thousands to pick from, why wouldn’t you? I say this in an attempt to really get you to look past all the hype out there. Don’t look at great looking sales pages that offer the latest way to “make millions”, as the “only” way to make millions. I hope you realize that I’m mocking the “make millions” aspect!
I don’t want to get into all the detail of what it takes to develop a successful website, just know it’s a lot. As you read the thousands of web pages of sales hype out there, that offer you the road to riches, I would like you to write down this one question to ask yourself when you feel tempted to get your credit card out. “If it was this easy why wouldn’t everyone be doing this?” The answer is simple, not enough commitment, time, or both, which is why a very small percentage make any money at all!
You’re probably wondering why. To enjoy a successful website that actually earns money takes time, commitment, more time, research, some more time, testing, and you guessed it, more time. If you have already decided to get your feet wet, you have probably already learned that affiliate programs are the easiest place to start. Many of the big ones will provide a website for you, products to market, and a certain level of support. That is exactly where I started. Started, and started, and started, get my drift! There wasn’t one that offered all the knowledge needed to run a small internet business. Believe me when I say small internet business because that is where you have to, and will start. Don’t ever let that discourage you though. It has to start some where.
After too many programs too list, I have only found one program that provided all the education needed to start an internet business, and still the only one I count on today. And if you’re thinking that’s what this whole post was leading up to, you’re wrong. As you see I don’t even have a link to it. That is not what this blog is dedicated to.
